Cells are non-motile, non-spore-forming, facultatively anaerobic rods. They grow at 15–40 °C, pH 3.5–7.5, and 0–9 % NaCl. They produce both lactic acid isomers. They hydrolyse aesculin, are tellurite and bile-aesculin tolerant and convert arginine to ornithine [
