Tiensuu (1938) misidentified the present species as Phaonia sordidisquama (presently treated as a Canarian subspecies of P. trimaculata , see below) based on long series of specimens from two localities in Madeira . A reexamination of specimens from both localities (see above) revealed that they all belong to P. tuguriorum tuguriorum . The Madeiran record of Phaonia canariensis (presently treated as a Canarian subspecies of P. tuguriorum , see below) by Pont (2008) also refers to the nominal subspecies of P. tuguriorum . The nominal subspecies is widely distributed in the Mediterranean region and is here also recorded from Madeira .
