Type locality : Key West, Florida. Distribution : This species has been reported from southern Florida ( Shoemaker, 1933 ; Thomas, 1993 ); the Gulf of Mexico ( McKinney, 1977 ; Thomas, 1993 , Rakocinski et al ., 1993 , 1996 ); Cuba ( Ortiz, 1978 ); Belize ( Thomas, 1993 ); Brazil ( Shoemaker, 1933 ); Uruguay , Argentina ( Barnard & Barnard, 1990 ); southern California and the Gulf of California ( Barnard, 1962 ). Range extension: Within the Gulf of Mexico , this species has been recorded from the Florida Keys ( Shoemaker, 1933 ; Thomas, 1993 ), the northern Gulf of Mexico at Perdido Key, Florida ( Rakocinski et al ., 1993 , 1996 ) and from southern Texas ( McKinney, 1977 ; Thomas, 1993 )). The presence of this species at CV inlet extends its geographic distribution within the Gulf to Veracruz State, Mexico . Remarks: Hartmanodes nyei constitutes one of the main food components of pleuronectiform fishes from the continental shelf of South Brazil and North Uruguay ( Wakabara et al ., 1982 ). The depth range at which it occurs is 1 to 166 m and it has a preference for muddy sands ( Wakabara et al ., 1991 ). The salinity and temperature ranges measured at the collection site were 19 to 27 %o and 28 to 29 °C, respectively.
