(1850) Description of new species and varieties of mammals found in Ceylon . Journal of the Ceylon Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, 2: 208 [208–215]. Valid name: Hipposideros speoris (Schneider, 1800) Referred specimen (marked with type *): ZMB 2493 , body in alcohol and ZMB 85623, skull and skeleton [of ZMB 2493 ]; Sri Lanka ; collector unknown; purchased from Pareiss . Comment: Although ZMB 2493 is erroneously listed as Phyllorhina Templetoni Fitzinger , it was described by Kelaart (1850), who appears to have based the description on several specimens. Tate (1941b: 390) mentioned two “cotypes”: BMNH 1852.1 . 24.2 and 1852.1.24.4. Since ZMB 2493 was purchased from Pareiss it is very doubtful that it was part of the type series, and hence should not be considered a type . The ZMB specimen tag is also inaccurately labelled “ ZMB 2443 .
