Type
locality.
“Die Küsten von
Chile
” (“
Chilean
coasts”) according to
Meyen
(1834a: 116)
.
In
his travel report,
Meyen
(1834b: 220)
specified that these gulls were shot in the bay of
Valparaíso
.
M.H.C. Lichtenstein
(1832)
reported that the specimen was collected in “
März
” (
March
).
Considering Meyen’s
itinerary (see above), he must have collected the specimen between
1–15 March 1831
. Poeppig collected his
syntype
at an unknown locality in
Chile
.
The
type
locality of
Larus glaucodes
Meyen
is thus coastal
Chile
(including
Valparaíso
,
Valparaíso Region
,
33.05°S
,
71.60°W
).
Remarks.
Meyen (1834a)
called the species
glaucodes
in the text (p. 115) and
glaucotes
on the accompanying plate (pl. 24), respectively. Subsequently, both spellings,
glaucodes
(e.g.
Boie 1844
: 194;
Cassin 1855
: 204) and
glaucotes
(e.g.
Meyen 1834b
: 220; Bruch 1853: 105, 1855: 291;
Lichtenstein 1854
: 98;
Bonaparte 1856
: 771) have been used. The first author we found who mentioned both spellings, chose one and who can thus be considered as the First Reviser (
sensu
ICZN 1999, Art. 24.2.3) is
Gray (1870: 114)
. Following his decision, the name should be spelled
glaucodes
.
