Type specimens and type localities of birds (Aves) collected during F. J. F. Meyen’s circumnavigation in 1830 – 1832 Author Mlíkovský, Jiří Author Frahnert, Sylke text Zootaxa 2017 4250 1 1 22 journal article 33320 10.11646/zootaxa.4250.1.1 ac9cc78c-c2cd-453f-8715-8f38648de567 1175-5326 439779 6F822FD9-FE5A-4AD8-8273-77DAA853D85C Larus glaucodes Meyen, 1834a : 115 , pl. 24. Now : Larus maculipennis M.H.C. Lichtenstein, 1823 (e.g. Dwight 1925 : 298; Hellmayr & Conover 1948b : 281; Dickinson 2003 : 148) or Larus maculipennis glaucodes Meyen, 1834a (e.g. A. Phillips in Belton 1984 : 517; Howell & Dunn 2007 : 313). Syntype : ZMB 13462 skin, collected by Eduard Poeppig in 1827–1829 in Chile . Syntype : ZMB 13463 ( Lichtenstein 1832, Nr. 73 sub “ Larus ), skin, collected by Meyen in “ Maerz ” [= 1–15 Mar 1831 ; see below] in “ Chile ” [= bay of Valparaíso , Chile ; see below]. For photos see Mallet-Rodriguez (2006: 177, fig. 3–4) . Type locality. “Die Küsten von Chile ” (“ Chilean coasts”) according to Meyen (1834a: 116) . In his travel report, Meyen (1834b: 220) specified that these gulls were shot in the bay of Valparaíso . M.H.C. Lichtenstein (1832) reported that the specimen was collected in “ März ” ( March ). Considering Meyen’s itinerary (see above), he must have collected the specimen between 1–15 March 1831 . Poeppig collected his syntype at an unknown locality in Chile . The type locality of Larus glaucodes Meyen is thus coastal Chile (including Valparaíso , Valparaíso Region , 33.05°S , 71.60°W ). Remarks. Meyen (1834a) called the species glaucodes in the text (p. 115) and glaucotes on the accompanying plate (pl. 24), respectively. Subsequently, both spellings, glaucodes (e.g. Boie 1844 : 194; Cassin 1855 : 204) and glaucotes (e.g. Meyen 1834b : 220; Bruch 1853: 105, 1855: 291; Lichtenstein 1854 : 98; Bonaparte 1856 : 771) have been used. The first author we found who mentioned both spellings, chose one and who can thus be considered as the First Reviser ( sensu ICZN 1999, Art. 24.2.3) is Gray (1870: 114) . Following his decision, the name should be spelled glaucodes .
