Pogonostoma ( Bathypogonum ) levigatum lucens : Moravec 2007: 84 , figs 272–285, 1662–1664. Type locality . Madagascar , western Sambirano : Île de Beraphia (island of Nosy Berafia of the Radama archipelago) . Type material . Lectotype in MNHN (designated by Moravec 2070), labelled: “ Madagascar / Île de Beraphia ” / Cote Ouest, 1934”; [printed]; “Muséum Paris, 1952 / Coll. R. Oberthür ” [bluish, printed]; “ Lectotype / Pogonostoma (Bathypogonum) / levigatum lucens Rivalier, 1970 / design. Jiří Moravec 2003” [red, printed] . Paralectotype . 1 ♀ in MNHN with same labels and: “Revision Jiří Moravec 2003: / Paralectotype / Pogonostoma / levigatum lu- cens Rivalier, 1970 ” [red, printed] . Other material examined . 5 ♁♁, 2 ♀♀ in SDEI [filed as “ levipunctum W. Horn i. l.”]: “ R. Ramena , NW Madag. / J. Mellis ” // “ Coll. W. Horn / DEI Eberswalde”. 1 ♁ in SDEI : “Bealanana, NW Madag.”; “levipunctum m.” // “ Coll. W. Horn det”. 2 ♁♁ , 4 ♀♀ in MFNB : “ Madagascar ” [filed as “ P. levigatum ”] . Differential diagnosis . Distinguished from the nominotypical subspecies by its even brighter body coloration ( Fig. 28 ) and following features: elytra metallic blue or green-blue, often with golden lustre on elytral disc; elytral punctures shallower and with wider and flatter, notably shiny intervals; setal vesture predominantly whitish; lacinia paler with ochre-testaceous outer area; antennomeres 6–11 brownish. Aedeagus ( Figs 44–43 ) shaped generally as in the nominotypical subspecies with variably longer or shorter apex. For the detailed redescription and illustrations of other characters, including of the lectotype , see the monograph of the genus ( Moravec 2007 ). Variability . Besides the rather variable coloration, also the length of the aedeagus apex considerably varies. As discussed and illustrated previously ( Moravec 2007 , figs 278–284), the specimens from Ramena, Bealanana and “Tananarive”, arranged in SDEI under the unpublished name “ levipunctum “ as well as the seven specimens in MFNB, show a considerable variability in the shape of the aedeagus apex. Nevertheless, as intermediate shapes of the aedeagi were found within the examined adults (also from the same locality), the differences in the length of the aedeagus apex were considered as a mere variability ( Moravec 2007 ). Distribution and biology . Pogonostoma ( Bathypogonum ) l. lucens is considered a geographical subspecies described by Rivalier (1970) from Sambirano. Besides the type locality, the western near-shore island of Nosy Berafia (= Île de Beraphia) of the Radama archipelago, it occurs also in the area of the Ramena river south-east of Ambanja, both localities belong to western Sambirano. One examined specimen is labelled “Bealanana”, which is a district in an inland northern Madagascar , but its northern border is adjacent to the district of Ambanja; thus the specimen may come from a forest in northern areas of the district, in the past probably connected by a forest strip running from the area of Ambondrona (southern part of the large Tsaratanana massif, Sambirano). The labels “ Antananarivo ” and “Tananarive” are either erroneous or more probably meaning “ Madagascar ”, as commonly labelled as such by insect dealers. The numerous specimens in MFNB, labelled “ Madagascar ”, possess quite homogenous characters and belong probably to one population, although their exact origin is unknown. Remarks . Rivalier (1970) mentioned that he described this subspecies according to one male and two females. However, only the two females coming from the type locality were found in MNHN by the second author of the present paper (see Moravec 2007 ); fortunately, Rivalier (1970) mentioned that the aedeagus (of the missing male) was identical with that of the nominotypical subspecies. Consequently, one of the existing females was designated as lectotype ( Moravec 2007 ).
