Male holotypes of the subspecies L. e. elgonica and L. e. aethiopica Emden, 1959 , seen; L. e. elgonica with head glued to the body; L. e. aethiopica Emden, 1959 with head missing. Diagnosis. Body length 3.5–5.0 mm; general colour brown with grey pollinosity; scutum with an “ Anthomyia - pattern”: the two presutural brown spots fused anteriorly and separated posteriorly, the postsutural band large, continuing as far as scutellum as a median line (usually interrupted in female); scutellum with a large transverse brown band, grey pollinose only at apical fourth ( Fig. 24 in Emden 1951 : 413); notopleuron and pleura grey pollinose; anepisternum brown on apical third; frons and fronto-orbital plate brown; face and parafacial silver pollinose; antenna, arista and palpus brown; haltere pale yellow; legs brown; male holoptic; frontal triangle short; arista plumose; postsutural dorsocentrals 3, all long; scutellum with long basal and apical pairs of setae and with numerous setulae on disc; lower katepisternal seta inserted closer to the long posterior one; lower calypter about twice the length of the upper one; costal spine absent; fore tibia without a submedian seta; mid femur with 2 preapical setae, one posterior and one posterodorsal; mid tibia with 2 posterior setae; sternite 1 bare. Notes. Male terminalia of both subspecies are figured in Emden (1951: 414: Figs. 25 and 26 , the latter actually of L. e. aethiopica ) (see Emden 1959 : 190–191).
