Milne-Edwards, 1880 Munida iris A. Milne-Edwards, 1880: 49 . Material examined. None. Distribution . Western Atlantic— USA ( Virginia , Carolinas), Gulf of Mexico (southeast coast), Mexico , Cuba , Cay Sal Banks, Lesser Antilles ( Barbados ), Guyana , Brazil ( Alagoas , São Paulo , Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul ), Uruguay ; Eastern Atlantic—Gulf of Cadiz, Canaries, African Coast ( Western Sahara , Mauritania ), Cape Verde Islands; Western Mediterranean— Spain , Morocco ( Melo-Filho 2006 , 2008 ). Remarks. The absence of specimens collected by us is probably due to our sampling effort in shallow waters. This species can be collected between 45 and 1303 m depth, but is usually found between 200 and 400 m . It was recorded offshore region ( 503–600 m ) of the São Paulo coast ( Melo-Filho 2008 ). We found two specimens deposited in the MZUSP collection obtained during expeditions of R/V Soloncy Moura (MZUSP 15348, st. 1141, 24°26ʹS / 044°05ʹW , 503 m , 23.iv.2002 ) and N.Oc. “Prof. W. Besnard” (MZUSP 13206, st. 6684, 25°43ʹS / 045°09ʹW , 511 m , 13.i.1998 ), and this later was the first record of M. iris off the São Paulo coast ( Melo-Filho 2006 ).
