Seemingly heterogenous subgenus, comprising species with various body size and surface sculpture, but with majority of diagnosis characters congruent. Body large, medium-sized or small. Elytral surface shiny or partly velvet. Penultimate palpomere of labial palpi non- or only moderately dilated. Internal sack of aedeagus possesses ventral spur with aberrant, only rarely normally developed projection.Antennomere 4 not widely lobed, dilated only in Ph. ( M. ) virgulata (Fairmaire, 1903) . Labrum sexually dimorphic in shape, except for Ph. ( M. ) propripenis sp. nov. , and Ph . ( M .) bucephala (W. Horn, 1900). Mentum with indistinct, short and subacute, rarely longer and acute central tooth.
