Description.
Male.
Head
. Brown. Maxillary palpus very pale brown. Antenna concolorous with face. Eye bridge 2–3 facets wide. Face with 4–5 scattered dark longer and shorter setae. Clypeus non-setose or with 1 dark seta. Maxillary palpus with 3 segments; in some specimens segment 2 and 3 fused; segment 1 longer than segment 2, segment 1 with 1–2 long sharp setae, with a dorsal patch of sensilla; segment 2 with 1 long sharp seta and 3–4 shorter truncate setae; segment 3 shortest, with 4–5 short truncate setae. Antennal flagellomere 4 1.8–
2
x as long as wide, neck shorter than broad; longest setae longer than the width of flagellomere.
Thorax
. Unicolorous dark brown. Setae dark. Anterior pronotum with 2–3 setae. Prothoracic episternum with 2–5 setae. Scutellum with 2 long setae.
Wing
. Length
1.3 mm
. Width/length 0.40–0.45. Anal lobe rather distinct. R1/R 0.50–0.60. c/
w 0.70
– 0.75. r-m non-setose. bM non-setose or with 1 seta. Haltere pale brown.
Legs
. Pale yellowish brown. Front tibial organ with pale and sparse vestiture forming a patch. Front tibial spur slightly longer than tibial width.
Abdomen
.
Brown, slightly paler than thorax. Setae dark.
Hypopygium,Figs 5
A, B. Brown, as abdomen. Gonocoxa longer than gonostylus; ventral setosity of gonocoxa sparse, setae at the apical part of the mesial margin not elongated. Gonostylus elongated, mesial side slightly impressed; setosity sparse, apicomesially with a few elongated setae; with a long and strong apical tooth; with 6–7 subapical megasetae (subequal in size, slender, straight or slightly curved, sharp) on a shallow mesial lobe,. Tegmen with small, sharp, apicolateral lobes, without a dorsal finger-like process.
Discussion.Corynoptera salmelai
resembles
C. spiciforceps
in having a rather apically narrow gonostylus with a strong apical tooth and 7–8 narrow, perpendicularly placed megasetae at the apical third of the gonostylus. Unlike in
Corynoptera spiciforceps
, the gonostylus of
C. salmelai
is slightly bulged mesially at the megasetae, it lacks the elongated seta at the middle of its gonostylus, present in
C. spiciforceps
, and it has its tegmen with sharp apicolateral corners, whereas
C. spiciforceps
has its tegmen apically rounded (
Figs 5
and
6
). Furthermore,
C. spiciforceps
has a distinct sensillar pit on its maxillary palpus, whereas the sensilla are in a patch in
C. salmelai
.
Etymology.
The species is named after the Finnish entomologist, Dr. Jukka Salmela, Rovaniemi, for his outstanding collection activity.
