Sesleria vaginalis Boiss. & Orph. in Boissier (1859: 130) Type :— GREECE . Type :— GREECE . in Graecia septentrionali , M. Korax Aetoiae , August 1896 , Tuntas & Leonis s.n. ( lectotype , designated here , WU0079488 !, image of the lectotype available at http://herbarium.univie.ac.at/database/detail.php?ID=560397) . Notes on Sesleria nitida var. brevidentata : This name was originally published by Halácsy (1904) by a short diagnosis (“Palea inferioris setae brevissimae, ejus arista palae quartam partem aequans”). Halácsy (1904) listed some places where this taxon was collected (all collectors were mentioned). According to Art. 9.6 of the ICN, all the specimens referring to Sesleria nitida var. brevidentata cited by Halácsy (1904) are syntypes . We found at WU (barcode 0079488, image available at http://herbarium.univie.ac.at/database/detail.php?ID=560397), a specimen consisting of two parts that probably belong to the same plant. The original label reported the following note: “ Sesleria argentea Savi var. nova brevidentata Hackel in litt. 1896 | In Graecia septentrionali: M. Korax Aetoiae | Tuntas & Leonis | Aug. 1896 ”. Both locality (“ M. Korax Aetoliae ”) and collector (“ Tuntas ”) were quoted by Halácsy (1904) , so that WU0079488 specimen is to be considered part of the original material for the name in issue. Accordingly, we here designate WU0079488 specimen as the lectotype of the name S. nitida var. brevidentata . To be noted that three revision labels are affixed on the lectotype sheet. On one of them, the word “ holotypus ” is reported together with a reference to the author and the date of typification (“typificavit L. Sonnleitner WU 2015-01-13 ”). However, since several syntypes were cited in the protologue, a holotype cannot be established, whereas a lectotypification is allowed (Arts. 9.1, 9.2, and 9.5 of the ICN). All three revision labels classify the lectotype as S. vaginalis Boissier & Orphanides in Boissier (1859: 130) . According to the current species concept in Sesleria ( Deyl 1946 ) we agree this identification and classify the specimen WU0079488 as S. vaginalis , whose occurrence on Mt. Korax (highest peak of the Vardousia massif in central Greece, and locus classicus of S. nitida var. brevidentata ) is confirmed by several authors ( Strid 1986 , Dimitrellos & Christodoulakis 1999 ; Kuzmanović et al. 2017 ). Accordingly, any possible reference of S. nitida var. brevidentata as belonging to the group of S. nitida , as assumed by Halácsy (1904) , must be excluded, S. nitida being a species endemic to the central-southern Apennines (peninsular Italy ).
