Diagnosis. The subgenus Hypocacculus differs from the subgenera Colpellus and Nessus by the usually absent supraorbital striae, outwardly curved frontal stria, never forming acute angles above eyes and in general slightly coarser frontal punctation, never being ruguloselacunose. Pronotal hypomeron is with short setae; elytra in most cases without apical elytral stria, usually with punctation that is becoming denser towards elytral apex. Protibia usually with 6–8 teeth on outer margin, becoming progressively smaller apically. Biology. See Biology of Hypocacculus s. l. Distribution. About 12 species are known, most of them from the Palaearctic and Afrotropical Regions; Hypocacculus ( Hypocacculus ) spretulus is spread in the Palaearctic Region and Indo-Malayan Subregion and Hypocacculus ( Hypocacculus ) hyla reaches as far as New Guinea ( MAZUR 1997 ). Species examined. Hypocacculus ( Hypocacculus ) atrocyaneus ( Schmidt, 1888 ) , H. ( H. ) elongatulus elongatulus (Rosenhauer, 1856) , H. ( H. ) elongatulus portusmagni (Coquerel, 1859) , H .
