Lampygnatha
gen. nov.
(
Figs. 5–11
)
Type
species.
Lampygnatha ikuoi
sp. nov.
, here designated.
Diagnosis.
Body medium, dorsal side glabrous. Pronotum broader than elytra, with a globiform, lateral projection. Elytra without striae, each elytron with a single longitudinal costa.
Description.
Head.
Mouthparts prolonged into rostrum (prognathous). Antennae serrate from 4th antennomere; clypeus with anterior margin medially emarginated; labrum small, transverse.
Pronotum.
broader than elytra; lateral margins diverging strongly from base in a more or less straight line to a globiform projection about ⅓ from base.
Scutellum
.
Pentagonal, excavate on disc.
Elytra.
without striae, each elytron with a single longitudinal costa.
Venter.
Prosternal process flat, without anterior prominence; legs with tibiae with a pair of short spurs at the apex.
Aedeagus.
Strongly sclerotised; relatively wide.
Comparison:
Lampygnatha
gen. nov.
is similar to the extant genera
Semiognatha
and
Conognatha
(
Pithiscus
)
in having the mouthparts prolonged into rostrum and the prosternal process flat, without anterior prominence, but differs in the following ways:
Lampygnatha
has the elytra punctate-rugose, without striae; each elytron has a single longitudinal costa with a row of punctures; and the pronotum is strongly broader than elytra, laterally with distinct globiform projections. In contrast,
Semiognatha
and
Conognatha
(
Pithiscus
)
has the elytra punctate, with around 9 striae, each with a row of punctures and with around 10 interstriae without a rows of punctures; interstriae can be flat or convex (weakly costate) or alternate between the two, but not with just a single costa as in
Lampygnatha
; the pronotum is narrower or only slightly broader than the elytra and with lateral margins without distinct projections.
Etymology:
The generic name is a contraction and combination of “
Lampyridae
” and the Greek adjective “
prognathous
” (having a projecting lower jaw) in reference to the resemblance of the new taxon with some species of
Lampyridae
and the mouthparts prolonged into rostrum, as in the genera
Conognatha
and
Semiognatha
.
