Paralichthys brasiliensis (Ranzani 1842) , ACL-HN-0053, 280 mm SL. Photo by Luis M. P. Ceríaco. Comments: This species was undescribed at the time Veloso prepared it. Fifteen herborized specimens of Pleuronectes are listed in the Ajuda’s inventory ( Ferreira, 1794 ), and two specimens of P. papillosus are mentioned in the transference document to the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. Two additional specimens are also mentioned in the transference list to the University of Coimbra but are missing. This species is described in the Ichthyologia Fluminensis manuscript and includes the same common names as the ones on the herbarium sheet, except that the indigenous name is written “Aramacá”. Antunes & Balbino (2003) identified the specimen as Ancylopsetta kumperae Tyler 1959 . Paralichthys brasiliensis occurs in the Southwestern Atlantic from Maranhão to Rio de Janeiro ( Brazil ) ( Figueiredo & Menezes 2000 ). Pleuronectes papillosus Linnaeus 1758 (= Syacium papillosum ) is also a Western Atlantic paralichthyid, but distinct from species of the genus Paralichthys by possessing a less arched lateral line.
