Classification on the specimen: “P. Th. Sparus ”. Common names on the specimen (Portuguese/Tupi): None. Comments: This species was undescribed at the time Veloso prepared it. One of the specimens (MCUC ZOO.0000013) has no classification on the herbarium sheet, while the other (MCUC ZOO.0000037) has only the supraspecific classification on it. On the latter, a specific name, “ aurata ”, was subsequently added in pencil. Sparus aurata Linnaeus 1758 (= Sparus auratus ) is a similar sparid that occurs in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. There are 67 herborized specimens of Sparus in the Ajuda’s inventory ( Ferreira 1794 ), but we cannot confidently assign this specimen to any name in the transference lists, or the Ichthyologia Fluminensis manuscript. Diplodus argenteus occurs in the southwestern Atlantic from Espírito Santo ( Brazil ) to Argentina ( Menezes & Figueiredo 1980 ) .
