Type genus: Ripiphorus Bosc, 1791 [as Rhipidophorus , unjustified emendation of type genus name by Perty (1831: xix), not in prevailing usage]. Comment: name conserved over the older Myoditini Gerstaecker, 1855 (Art. 40.2) (see Lawrence and Newton 1995: 889, as " Myoditini Costa, 1853"); incorrect original stem formation, not in prevailing usage; as mentioned by Lawrence and Newton (1995: 889) a number of authors used Ripiphoridae before Gemminger, however, their family-group names were based on Ripiphorus sensu Fabricius, 1792, which is a synonym of Metoecus Dejean, 1834; spelling of family-group and type genus names based on Krell (1996); we recommend that an application be submitted to the Commission to suppress Ripiphorites Laporte, 1840 for the Principles of Priority and Homonymy (Art. 65.2.1).
