Remarks: The species is in the genus
Paronychiurus
on www.
collembola
.org, although its generic position remains uncertain. Originally, it was described by
Folsom (1902)
as having pseudocelli on all terga, including some on a hind margin of the head and subcoxae. Later
Folsom (1917
, p. 648) corrected his description because “almost all the structures that I described as pseudocelli are in reality cuticular pits that form the sockets of exceptionally large setae”. As a result, his
O. dentatus
with 20/000/00022 pseudocelli was chosen by
Bagnall (1948)
as a
type
of his monotypic genus
Pseudonychiurus
(omitted on www.
collembola
.org).
Christiansen & Bellinger (1980)
studied Folsom’s
types
and gave quite different pseudocellar formulas, 23/0-122/3334-52 (dorsal) and 1/000/00-110-1 (ventral), which excludes this form not only from the genus
Paronychiurus
but also from the whole
Hymenaphorurini
tribe.
General distribution: Nearctic, “appears to be a marine littoral form” (
Christiansen & Bellinger 1980
, p. 448).
