Diagnosis. Combination of the following characters: eyes widely separated by a distance equivalent to 9 (male) or 12 (female) facet diameters; aedeagus with only a group of long and thin straight spines forming a lanceolate structure when packed; aedeagal sheath with apical sclerotized arch laterally expanded. Redescription. Male. Head ( Fig. 29 ): vertex pilose; distance between eyes equivalent to 9 facet diameters, antenna with pedicel shorter then scape, 14 flagellomeres, 14th small and ovoid, a pair of ascoids present on flagellomeres 4–13; palpus formula: 1.0:1.3:1.3:2.1. Wing ( Fig. 30 ): C with break on anterior margin, at the level of base of R 1 , R 2 united to R 4 and R 5 , R 3 short and separated, M 1 united to M 3 , M 2 incomplete. Terminalia ( Figs. 31–33 ): gonocoxite with 23–40 setae on dorso-lateral surface, gonostylus digitiform, shorter than gonocoxite; hypandrium present but weakly sclerotized; aedeagus with a group of long and thin spines, arranged together medially, forming a lanceolate structure when packed; aedeagal sheath with an expanded apical sclerotized arch dorsal to aedeagal spines; epandrium with a single central aperture and apical margin concave; subepandrial sclerite Y-shaped, anterior arm much shorter than posterior arms; epandrial appendage long with a clavate tenaculum at apex; epiproct with triangular posterior margin; hypoproct wider than long, subrectangular with posterior margin slightly concave. Female. Similar to male except: Head: distance between eyes equivalent to 12 facet diameters, palpus formula: 1.0:1.3:1.3:2.0. Wing: length 1,19 mm, maximum width 0,206 mm . Terminalia: hypogynium wide at base, short, strongly narrowed medially, hypogynial valve with approximately six setae on each apical lobe; internal lateral bristles projecting medially, forming a distinct and small lateral lobe; spermathecal complex longer than wide. Detail of hypandrium, gonopods and aedeagal complex, dorsal view. Abbreviations. ash=aedeagal sheath; asp=aedeagal spines; eap=epandiral appendage; eja=ejaculatory apodeme; ep=epandrium; gpd=gonocoxal apodeme; gt=gonostylus; gx=gonocoxite; hyp=hypandrium; ten=tenaculum. Distribution. Brazil ( Espírito Santo , Rio de Janeiro , Rio Grande do Sul ) Holotype condition. Slide mounted, adult skin dissected from and mounted with pupal skin; adult head and wings not separated from thorax and abdomen, antenna and palpi incomplete, wings folded. Remarks. It was observed a malformation on antennae of one specimen from the State of Espírito Santo , which has left antenna with flagellomeres 13 and 14 fused. The specimens of the State of Rio Grande do Sul have 40 setae on the gonocoxite, but we regard this as an intraspecific variation. M . ( M .) garota and M . ( M .) menina lack the thick posterior aedeagal spines which are common in Maruina ( Maruina ) and share an expanded apical sclerotized arch on the aedeagal sheath. These two species can be differentiated mainly by the apex of gonostylus, which is pointed in M . ( M .) garota and truncate in M . ( M .) menina .
