J. (1827) Monographies de mammalogie, ou Description de quelques genres de mammifères, dont les espèces ont été observées dans les différens musées de l'Europe. Tome 1: 189 [1–268]. Paris 1827. Valid name: Pteropus personatus Temminck, 1827 Syntype (marked with type * in Peters´ handwriting): ZMB 2635 , skin and skull, male, adult; Ternate Id. , Moluccas, Indonesia ; collected by Reinwardt , 1821, in exchange from RMNH . Comment: Temminck described this species on the basis of two specimens [ syntypes ]. These two specimens had been preserved in the RMNH collections alledgedly until 1888 ( Jentink : 140), but Matschie (1899: 32) reported only one specimen from Ternate (leg. Reinwardt ) was present in RMNH . ZMB 2635 is a catalogue number given by Peters presumably in the 1860s. So Peters had received this specimen long before he died (1883). ZMB 2635 is supposed to be one of the two specimens used by Temminck for the description .
