Type material.
Achlyodes oiclus
Mabille, 1889
was described based on one female [
holotype
] from
Chiriqui
[
Panama
] in the Otto Staudinger collection. The female
holotype
is deposited at the
ZMHU
with the following labels: / Origin./
Chiriqui
Fr./
Achl. oiclus
Mb.
♀
/
Achlyodes oiclus
B. C. A. Rh. Ii.
p. 396./
oiclus
Mab.
/ GEN. PREP., MIELKE 1996/.
Pyrdalus corbulo cora
Evans, 1953
, was described based on the male [holo]type from
Honduras
, and on a couple from the same locality. The male
holotype
is deposited at the
NHMUK
with the following labels: / Type [verso from the same label:]
cora
Evans/
Honduras
[verso from the same label:] 45 123/
Honduras
. Dyson. 45–123./ [label with genitalia attached]/ BMNH(E) 1236499/.
Diagnosis.
FW length: males
19 mm
(n=1) and females
21 mm
(n=1).
Telemiades oiclus
is distinguished from other species of the genus by the following characters: VFW of males with a dark yellow androconial patch in CuA
2
–2A; DHW with a tuft of long cream hair–like scales in Sc+R
1
–Rs; oval yellowish patch under the tuft of androconial scales; yellowish patch covering more than posterior half of VHW; uncus with distal margin convex.
Natural history.
Immatures have been reported on
Dioclea malacocarpa
and
D. wilsonii
(Fabaceae)
(
Janzen & Hallwachs 2009
).
Burns & Janzen (2005)
and
Janzen & Hallwachs (2009)
illustrated all the immature stages of
T. oiclus
.
Distribution.
Telemiades oiclus
occurs in Central America, with records in
Honduras
,
Costa Rica
, and
Panama
.
Taxonomic discussion.
After its description,
Achlyodes oiclus
Mabille, 1889
was transferred to
Ouleus
Lindsey, 1925
by
Shepard (1934)
. Later,
Steinhauser (1989)
returned the species to
Achlyodes
Hübner, [1819]
.
Evans (1953)
erroneously interpreted
Achlyodes oiclus
as a subspecies of
Bolla phylo
. Analysis of the material deposited in the NHMUK, revealed that the specimen studied by Evans is
Staphylus lizeri album
Steinhauser, 1989
. In the same study,
Evans (1953)
described
Pyrdalus corbulo cora
. Recently,
Burns & Janzen (2005)
transferred the name
oiclus
to
Telemiades
and synonymized
P. c. cora
with
T. oiclus
. The examination of the
holotype
of
P. c. cora
confirms the synonymy. As discussed by
Burns & Janzen (2005)
,
T. oiclus
forms a subgroup of
Telemiades
together with
T. corbulo
,
T. insulsus
and
T. quammeni
. Although they exhibit unique characters within the genus, such as androconial organs on the wings of the male, the morphology of the male and female genitalia is characteristic of
Telemiades
.
