Chlaenius atripennis LeConte, 1847: 436. Type locality: "provinciis mediis" (original citation). Syntype(s) in MCZ [# 5863]. Synonymy established by LeConte (1853c: 390), confirmed by Lindroth (1969a: 986). Distribution. This subspecies ranges from Newfoundland (Lindroth 1955a: 134) to northwestern Montana (Russell 1968: 66), south to central New Mexico (Fall and Cockerell 1907: 160), central Texas, northwestern Georgia, and northern South Carolina (Bell 1960: 142).
