, with 267 valid known species, associated almost exclusively with galls on
Asteraceae (

)
. Typically,
Rhopalomyia
species have a reduced number of palpal segments, one or two, but some species have three to four segments; vein C is not interrupted immediately posterior to its juncture with R5; tarsal claws may or not may have basal tooth; in the female the eighth abdominal tergite is undivided longitudinally and the cerci are fused; males with completely setulose gonostyle. Larva with or without spatula.
