Brief description
Probably all species are monoecious. Lower receptacle two-celled. Antheridia sessile or subsessile, on the basal cell of the primary appendage (
Fig. 11E
, an); proliferating into branches in older thalli.
Remarks
The genus consists of 14 species, of which eight in Europe, two in
Denmark
. The most recently described species are
P. mediterraneus
(
Santamaria & Rossi 1999
)
, and
P. ptilii
(
Majewski 1999
)
. In this genus we find some of the smallest species of
Laboulbeniales
, with thalli not reaching 50 µm of length, like
P. perparvus
Santam. (
Santamaria 1992a
)
.
