Type data: To describe this species Smith (1854) used an undetermined number of female specimens collected, according to the original description, in Brazil . A single specimen from the type-series was found at NHMUK being here designated the lectotype . The exemplar has the following data label: Type H. T . [red-rimmed circular label, printed]\ 4932 [circular label, handwritten]\ B.M. TYPE HYM . [printed] 17B.921. [handwritten]\ maculifrons Sm Type [handwritten]\ Centris maculifrons Smith Type. [handwritten]. Type locality: Brazil . Centris ( Cyanocentris ) buchwaldi Friese, 1901 . 346. Type data: Syntypes female ( ZMB ). Type locality: Ecuador : Guayas province : Guayaquil . Centris ( Centris ) disclusa Cockerell, 1922 . 5, 6. Type data: Holotype male ( USNM , examined). Type locality: Ecuador : Guayas province : “Posoya” (probably Posorja, an administrative division of Guayaquil) . Comments: Taxonomic decision for synonymy: Moure et al . (2007) . According to Smith (1854) , the type specimens of this species were collected in an indeterminate locality in Brazil . However, apparently this species would be distributed on the western slope of the Andes, with confirmed records in Ecuador and Peru (see Moure et al ., 2007 ). Considering this, the record of C . maculifrons in Brazil could be due to a labeling error, like that found in C . sponsa (see below). Either way, there is no additional information available about the collector of the type specimens of C . maculifrons or more specific data about its supposed type locality.
