Red Sea, East Africa and Mascarenes east to Marquesas and Easter islands, north to South China Sea and Hawaiian Islands, south to Lord Howe and Norfolk islands. Found on coral reefs, often in deeper areas near drop-offs to the open sea, and in shallow lagoons adjacent to areas of strong currents, as well as over deeper rocky reefs, 0– 275 m . Marine. Eastern Atlantic from Mauritania to Angola ; Red Sea, East and South Africa east to Philippines and New Guinea , north to southern Japan , south to northern Australia . 1– 200 m . DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Red Sea, East and South Africa east to Panama , north to Ryukyu and Ogasawara islands, south to New South Wales ( Australia ), New Caledonia and Austral Islands. Found in lagoons and seaward reefs where it is often resting in caves or under coral ledges during the day, or on a sand patch, or in a channel, 2–300 m , usually 8– 40 m . Marine.
