Rhiniidae
This family of calyptrate flies contains 382 predominantly tropical species (
Evenhuis & Pape 2020
). It is unknown in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions (
Marshall 2012
).
Rondani (1861e
,
1865
c
, 1873e,
1875c
) described two Palaearctic, two
Oriental
, and one Afrotropical species in his “
Stirps Stomoxidinae
”. The family
Rhiniidae
was proposed by
Brauer & Bergenstamm (1889)
. One nominal species is currently considered as valid, four as junior synonyms (
James 1977
,
Pont 1980
b
, Schumann 1986,
Pape
et al.
1995
). The
type
material is distributed between the MZUF (Palaearctic) and the MSNG (
Oriental
and Afrotropical).
