It is unknown in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions ( Marshall 2012 ). Rondani (1861e , 1865 c , 1873e, 1875c ) described two Palaearctic, two Oriental , and one Afrotropical species in his “ Stirps Stomoxidinae ”. The family Rhiniidae was proposed by Brauer & Bergenstamm (1889) . One nominal species is currently considered as valid, four as junior synonyms ( James 1977 , Pont 1980 b , Schumann 1986, Pape et al. 1995 ). The type material is distributed between the MZUF (Palaearctic) and the MSNG ( Oriental and Afrotropical).
