Tabanus lateritius
Rondani, 1863
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 80.
TYPE
LOCALITY: “
De la Caroline
[
Carolina
(North America)]” (
Macquart 1847: 39
) [
type
locality for
Tabanus unicolor
Macquart, 1847
].
TYPE
MATERIAL: see Remarks.
CURRENT STATUS: junior synonym of
Tabanus rufofrater
Walker, 1850
(
Philip 1950: 314
,
Philip 1965b: 336
).
REMARKS:
Wiedemann (1828: 141)
and
Macquart (1847: 38)
described two different species under the same name,
Tabanus unicolor
. Consequently,
Rondani (1863: 80)
proposed the new replacement name
Tabanus lateritius
for
Tabanus unicolor
Macquart, 1847
, incorrectly attributing the species described by Wiedemann to Meigen.
Philip (1965a: 122)
incorrectly considered this nominal species as a
nomen nudum
. The
type
material for
Tabanus lateritius
will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e.,
Tabanus unicolor
. There is no
type
of this latter species in the MHNL (O. Boilly, pers. comm., 2019),
MNHN
(Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020) and OUMNH (Z. Simmons, pers. comm., 2019) where Macquart’s collection is preserved.
