Jahrb. Syst. 22: 375. 1896 . Range:— Peru , Bolivia ( CH , LP, SC, TA), and Argentina . Ecology:— Fairly common; saxicolous or terrestrial in semihumid forests, especially of Alnus Mill. and Podocarpus L’Hér. ex Pers. ; 1500–3400 m ; in Peru also in coastal fog vegetation at 700 m ( León et al . 2002 ). Often forms dense clonal populations . Notes:— This species, along with A. gilliesii and A. peruvianum , reproduces vegetatively by scaly proliferous buds. The buds are located at the blade bases on fully developed leaves, or at the apex of an elongate petiole. In the latter case, development of the blade is delayed, giving the petiole the appearance of a stolon.
