"Habitat in Europae humectis, praesertim maritimis." RCN: 2110. Lectotype (Tardieu-Blot in Aubreville , Fl. Cambodge Laos Vietnam 5: 44. 1967): Herb. Linn. No. 374.3 ( LINN ) . Generitype of Apium Linnaeus. Current name: Apium graveolens L. ( Apiaceae ). Note: Apium graveolens , with the type designated by Reduron & Jarvis (Herb. Clifford: 107, Apium 1, BM), was proposed as conserved type of the genus by Jarvis (in Taxon 41: 557. 1992). However, the proposal was eventually ruled unnecessary by the General Committee (see Barrie, l.c. 55: 795-796. 2006 for a review of the history of this and related proposals). The type designated by Reduron & Jarvis is, however, pre-dated by the choice of 374.3 (LINN) by Tardieu-Blot (1967). With the failure of the conservation proposal, this collection becomes the correct choice as type.
