Descriptive notes.
Head-body 79-84 mm (tailless), ear 20-22 mm, hindfoot 13-18 mm, forearm 52-56 mm; weight 30-40 g. Ismael’s Broad-nosed Bat is medium-sized. Dorsal fur is dark brown, ventral furis grayish, and dorsal and ventral hairs are tricolored. Dorsal hairs are long (8-10 mm). Head is robust, snout is short and broad, and facialstrips are darkish, supraocular just a bit brighter than subocular. Dorsalstripe is narrow but brighter than facial ones. Noseleaf is large and spearshaped; its edges are dark, never bright yellowish or cream, and lower rim is free. Folds on ears are absent to poorly marked (this can be variable). Insertion of posterior edge of plagiopatagium occurs on first metatarsal, and third metacarpal is shorter than fifth. Caudal membraneis very short in middle, with deep V-shaped groove; edge has dense fringe of short hairs. Dense and long hair occurs on dorsum offeet. P* has two stylar cusps on its posterior face. M' metastyle is present, and protocone is small and blunt.
Habitat.
Pre-montane and montane humid forests of Andean slopes, secondary forests, and plantations at elevations of 1230-2950 m.
Food and Feeding.
There is no specific information available for Ismael’s Broad-nosed Bat, but other broad-nosed bats feed heavily on fruits.
Breeding.
Pregnant Ismael’s Broad-nosed Bat have been found in January and March in eastern
Ecuador
and February in
Colombia
.
