Redescription of adult male:
Color in alcohol brown, wings pale, antennae yellow, dorsum of head dark brown, covered with small and scattered pubescence. Length from tip of head to apices of folded forewings about
7.25 mm
; maxillary palps each about
2 mm
long; 2nd segment longer than 3rd; 5th segment sub-equal to 1st–4th segments together; labial palps each
0.75 mm
; antennae each about
7 mm
. Length of each forewing
6.25 mm
(n = 5); each hind wing about
4.75 mm
.
Male genitalia (
Figs. 57–61
): Abdominal segment IX longitudinally short, anterior margin convex in lateral view; dorsomedian keel directed posterad, medially notched apically, granular, triangular in dorsal view; posterolateral lobe on each side produced, setose, setae separated by gap from those on posterolateral slope of keel. Slight depression visible on dorsal margin between segment IX and tergum X. Body of tergum X longitudinally short, quadrangular in lateral and dorsal views; apicoventral setose lobes short, broad, quadrate, directed posterad, truncate apically; in dorsal view quadrate, truncate apically and pointed apicomesally; apicodorsal lobes fused, positioned medially; dorsal interlobular gap small between apicoventral lobes. Inferior appendages each long, basal segment slightly dilated medially, broad apically in lateral view, 1.5 times as long as apical segment; straight in ventral view; apical segment small, broad, preapically concave, hooked apicomesally in dorsal and ventral views. Phallic apparatus long, abruptly sinuous near middle with two right angles; endotheca compressed, with single pair of broad anterior dorsolateral spines, followed posteriorly by 3 asymmetrical spines dorsally, paired dorsal phallotremal sclerites, 4 asymmetrical preapical spines, and 3 long and slender apical spines.

Diagnosis:
This species belongs to the
Hydropsyche annulata
Group of
Hydropsyche
.
It is similar to
Hydropsyche boreas
Malicky & Chantaramongkol 2000
,
H. briareus
Malicky & Chantaramongkol 2000
, and
H. camillus
Malicky & Chantaromongkol 2000
(all from
Thailand
) in the general shape of the genitalia. Among these,
H. homunculus
is most similar to
H. boreas
; however, the apicoventral setose lobe of tergum X is blunt apically in dorsal view and the apicodorsal median keel of segment IX is directed distinctly posterad in
H. homunculus
, indicating that the latter is a different species. There are some conspicuous differences in the male genitalia of the specimens observed from
India
with those of the
type
specimens of
H. homunculus
especially in the structure of the phallus. The phallic structure of
H
.
homunculus
is similar to that of
H. serpentina
Schmid 1965
, reported from
China
, but a determination that the Indian specimens represent a distinct species can be confirmed only with observation of similar specimens supplemented with molecular data.
