Anagram of the generic name Risophilus (as Rizophilus ), derived from the Greek philos (beloved) and rhiza (root) [masculine]. Dromiolus Reitter, 1905: 230, 235. Type species: Dromius nigriventris Thomson, 1857 (= Dromius notatus Stephens, 1827) by original designation. Etymology. From the generic name Dromius [ q.v .] and the Latin suffix - olus (diminutive) [masculine]. Similidromius Mateu, 1953: 140. Type species: Dromius elliptipennis Wollaston, 1864 by monotypy. Synonymy established by Machado (1992: 519). Etymology. From the Latin adjective similis , - e (like) and the generic name Dromius [ q.v .], alluding to the resemblance of the species in the hands of Mateu to those of Dromius [masculine]. Diversity. About 50 species (Lorenz 2005: 477) in the Nearctic (two species, one of them adventive), Oriental (two species), Palaearctic (about 35 species, 15 of them endemic to the Canary and Madeira Islands), and Afrotropical (11 species) Regions.
