Aphelocheiridae
are similar to
Naucoridae
in regard to their dorsoventally flattened bodies, lack of forewing venation, enlarged fore femora, anteriorly-directed male genitalia, and benthic ecology. As a result, they have been treated as a subfamily of
Naucoridae
by many previous authors (D. Polhemus & J. Polhemus, 1989 and references therein). Distinguishing characters for
Aphelocheiridae
include the antennae, which although 4-segmented as in
Naucoridae
are more slender and elongate, projecting well beyond the eyes when viewed from above; the labium, which is long, usually extending
