Kahl (1932) recognized Wrześniowski’s variety as a distinct species and Borror & Hill (1995) transferred it to the genus Euplotoides . According to Foissner et al. (1991), E. eurystomus is a cosmopolitan occurring especially in standing (rain pools, swamps, ponds, lakes etc.) and slowly running waters. To date, it was reported from Europe, Asia, North and South America as well as from Africa (for reviews, see Dragesco & Dragesco-Kernéis 1986 and Foissner et al. 1991). In the territory of Slovakia , E. eurystomus was found in the river system of the Danube: in Čičov ( Matis & Tirjaková 1992 ), in Kráľovská lúka, Istragov and Starý les ( Matis & Tirjaková 1995 ), and in Kľúčovec (unpubl. observ.); in the main stream of the Danube ( Tirjaková 1992a ; Baláži 2010 ); and in the Morava river ( Matis & Tirjaková 1994 ; Baláži & Matis 2002 ).
