Sergentomyia includes more than half of the described phlebotomine fauna in the eastern hemisphere, approximately 280 species. As noted by Seccombe et al. (1993) , Sergentomyia species usually feed on ectothermic vertebrates, but some species (e.g. S. gomboki ) are known to take bloodmeals form mammals, including humans.
