*The genera
Lordyrops
Reitter, 1875
and
Meoncerus
Sharp, 1891
were both synonymized under
Apsectochilus
by Leschen (1999). Subsequently, Kirejtshuk (2008) treated these as distinct genera. In the present study, we examined the type species of the above genera (
i.e
.,
Lordyrops deyrollei
Reitter, 1875
(holotype, MNHN);
Meoncerus salvini
Sharp, 1891
(holotype, BMNH); and
Apsectochilus hydroporoides
Reitter, 1874
(type? determined by Dr. Kirejtshuk, MNHN). Among them,
A. hydroporoides
possesses intermediate characters between the
Cyllodes
- and
Oxycnemus
-complexes in having 1) more or less deeply emarginate anterior labral margin, 2) process at apicolateral corner of pro- and mesotibiae, 3) subparallel-sided lateral margins of antennal grooves, 4) rugulous surface of metaventrite and abdominal sternites, 5) triangular scutellum, and 6) meso- and metaventral junction abruptly concave. A phylogenetic analysis of the genera would help to clarify the relationships and limits of these two groups and other cyllodine genera.
Etymology.
The specific epithet means “beautiful.”
Diagnosis.
This species differs from its congeners by the following combination of characters: pronotum and elytra different in color; pronotum with a reddish brown to jet black longitudinal maculation; subcoxal lines on abdominal sternite III absent; pro- and mesotarsal segments II and III of males feebly dilated; apical margin of tegmen narrowly rounded or subtruncate in ventral view; median lobe subparallel at basal 2/3, then strongly converging anteriorly in ventral view; apical margin of median lobe narrowly rounded; apex of long, slender gonocoxites deeply incised.
Similar Species.
This new species is similar to
C. laeticulus
in the round body and similar shape of pronotal maculation, acuminate apical margin of the median lobe, and similar shape of the sclerites of the internal sac. It can be distinguished by the more acute apical margin of the median lobe and deeply incised apex of the ovipositor.
Description.
Length 1.79–2.03 (1.87) mm, width 1.43–1.60 (1.55) mm, depth 0.74–0.97 (0.87) mm (
n
= 5).
Male.
Body (
Fig. 1E
) round; dorsal disc of head (except paler apical area), antennal club (except paler apical area of segment XI) and scutellum reddish brown to jet black; mouthparts, antennal segments I–VIII, abdominal tergites, and venter reddish yellow; pronotum reddish yellow, with a reddish brown to jet black longitudinal maculation; elytra reddish brown to jet black, usually darker laterally than medially.
Head:
Dorsal disc possessing sparse, minute punctures; interspaces reticulate. Labrum feebly notched at middle. Antenna (
Fig. 5G
) with club long and large, ACL/ASI-VIII = 0.88 (
n
= 1); antennal segment XI with 2 oval antennal sensillae; approximate ratio of each segment (
n
= 1) 4.84: 3.64: 2.69: 1.96: 1.96: 1.02: 1.00: 1.49: 3.95: 4.40: 7.64.
Pronotum:
2.38–3.33 (2.94) times as wide as long (
n
= 5); disc with sparse, minute punctures; interspaces slightly reticulate.
Scutellum:
Densely punctate; interspaces slightly reticulate.
Elytra:
0.88–0.96 (0.92) times as long as wide (
n
= 5), 2.65–3.73 (3.21) times as long as pronotum (
n
= 5), widest at basal 1/3; each elytron with 9 regular rows of punctures about as large as eye facet; interstices with sparse minute punctures.
Venter:
Prosternum feebly convex along midline. Metaventrite strongly convex. Abdominal sternite III without subcoxal lines.
Legs:
Slender; pro- and mesotarsal segments I–III slightly dilated; tarsal claws simple.
Genitalia:
Tegmen (
Fig. 5A, C, E
) feebly constricted at mid-length, then moderately convergent apically; TL/TW = 2.39 (
n
= 1); apical and lateral margins of tegmen strongly undulating in ventral view; apical margin of tegmen narrowly rounded or subtruncate in ventral view; median lobe (
Fig. 5B, D, F
) subparallel-sided at basal 2/3, then strongly converging anteriorly in ventral view; apical margin of median lobe narrowly rounded; sclerites of internal sac as in
Fig. 5B
.
Female.
Pro- and mesotarsal segments I–III more weakly dilated than those of males. Ovipositor (
Fig. 5H
) with deeply incised apices of long, slender gonocoxites.
Variability.
This species varies in the shape of the apical margin of the tegmen, which may be narrowly rounded, subtruncate, or widely rounded.
