Lophogaster intermedius is very similar to L . inermis , but the apex of the antennal scale of the former species features a short, sharp spine with 4 to 6 small, serrate spines on the distal part of the outer margin. The lateral margin of the telson has one pair of spines, and the posterior tip two pairs of spines; the apical plate bears 2 to 4 short spinules and 2 long bristles ( Hansen 1910 ; Casanova 1997 ).
