No species of the Hemidactylus bowringii group were seen at any of the sites visited. Hemidactylus berdmorei is known only from a disintegrating holotype collected in 1853 in Mergui (= Myeik), hence vouchers of the Smooth Gecko from this area are essential for resolving the taxonomic status of this named taxon ( McMahan and Zug 2007 ). If it is an autochthonous species, this gecko is likely a valid species; however, because Mergui was an active seaport in the mid 19th century, it is possible that the specimen was a recent arrival from elsewhere in Asia and did not become established. Red List status. NE.
