, canopy fogging of
Acacia nilotica
in tropical savanna,
McGavin G.C.
, deposited in OUMNH (
PBI
_OON 33858)
.
ETYMOLOGY: Most of the specimens have been collected from
Acacia
trees, hence the species name.
DIAGNOSIS: Males of
O. acaciae
can be recognized by the anteriorly directed projection of the endites (
Figs. 2, 3
,
17–20
), the bulb with a conspicuous retrolateral swelling and a broad embolus whose tip is grooved and has a small triangular tooth (
Figs. 32–34
). Females can be recognized by the combination of abdomen with short trunkshaped posterior elongation (
Fig. 7
), anterior receptaculum with lateral expansions (
Fig. 36
) and AUS club shaped with recurved terminal projections (Pr) (
Fig. 8–11
).
MALE (PBI_OON 33858,
Figs. 1–5
,
17–34
). Total length 0.92. CEPHALOTHORAX:
Carapace
yellow, elongate oval in dorsal view (CW/CL ≈ 0.68), pars cephalica domed in lateral view, anteriorly narrowed to between 0.5 and 0.75 times its maximum width.
Clypeus
sloping forward in lateral view.
Eyes
ALE-PME touching, PME circular; PLE-PME separated by less than PME radius.
Sternum
longer than wide, pale yellow, uniform, posterior margin extending posteriorly beyond anterior edges of coxae IV as single extension; setae abundant, evenly scattered.
Mouthparts:
Chelicerae, endites and labium pale orange. Chelicerae straight; retromargin with one tooth and some denticles (
Fig. 24
). Labium elongated hexagon, anterior margin pointed at middle, same as sternum in sclerotization; with 6 or more setae on anterior margin, anteriorly with three subdistal setae, medially with one pair of setae, posteriorly with one seta (
Fig. 18–20
). Endites serrula present in single row, same as sternum in sclerotization, anterior part bifid, one prong with sclerotized tip, other one provided with flattened, pectinate setae; sclerotized tip with strong, hook like projection pointing forward (
Fig. 2–3
,
18
); posterior part provided with diagonal furrow (
Fig. 17– 20
)). ABDOMEN: ovoid; dorsum soft portions pale white, with dark posterior end.
Spinnerets
(
Fig. 26–28
): ALS with four spigots, PMS with one spigot, PLS with two spigots. LEGS: white. patella plus tibia I shorter than carapace (TL/CL ≈ 0,76). GENITALIA (
Figs. 3
,
12–16
,
29–34
): Palp patella attached to tibia basally; tibia one to two times as wide as femur; cymbium yellow, without distal patch of setae; bulb yellow, stout, tapering apically, with retrolateral side strongly protruding; embolus dark, short, cylindrical at base, flattened at extremity, distally with shallow, ventral groove, ending in well developed triangular tooth at edge of distal, slightly concave, platform.

FEMALE (PBI_OON_0033861,
Figs. 6–11
,
35–37
). As in male except as noted. Total length 1.25. CEPHA- LOTHORAX:
Sternum
yellow, anterior margin unmodified.
Mouthparts:
Chelicerae, endites and labium yellow. Labium anterior margin indented at middle. ABDOMEN: with short posterior extension; dorsum soft portions yellow. Spinnerets: PMS with two spigot, PLS with three spigots. GENITALIA (
Figs. 8–11
,
35–37
): Shape: fairly complex, exterior with small circular sclerotized depressions (Po) near posterior margin on each side of central longitudinal dark area (AUS), latter with one recurved arc shape anteriorly (Pr); ARe, when visible, oval, with anterior margin under Pr more or less parallel with posterior margin of Pr (
Fig. 9
). Internally, anterior uterine sclerite (AUS) long and broad, tongue-shaped, with recurved lateral protrusions (Pr) originating from its distoventral surface; anterior receptaculum (ARe) egg-shaped, laterally expanded, attached to mid-ventral surface of AUS (
Figs. 9
,
36, 37
); posterior plate (Pp) bowl-shaped (
Fig. 9, 10
,
35
), covers dorsal surfaces of ARe and most of AUS; posterior receptaculum absent.
