Depth: intertidal to 360 m ( 1,181 ft ) (Compagno in Carpenter 2003 ). Naylor et al. (2012) suggest that C. brachyurus may be comprised of several species; one from the Indo-Pacific and perhaps another from the Atlantic and southern Africa region.
