This species was proposed based on male specimens collected by the ornithologist Charles Vaurie (1906‒1975) and his wife entomologist Patricia (1909‒1982) in 1953 at Tequila,
Jalisco State
during the David Rockefeller Mexican Expedition of the American Museum of Natural History. The
