Cenchrus echinatus
Linnaeus
,
Species Plantarum
2
: 1050. 1753
.
"Habitat in Jamaica, Curassao." RCN: 7585.
Lectotype
(Veldkamp in Jarvis & al.,
Regnum Veg.
127: 31. 1993): Herb. A. van Royen No. 912.356-116 (
L
)
.
Generitype
of
Cenchrus
Linnaeus
(vide Green,
Prop. Brit. Bot.
: 193. 1929).
Current name:
Cenchrus echinatus
L.
(
Poaceae
).
Note:
Hitchcock (in
Contr. U. S. Natl. Herb.
12: 127. 1908) and a number of later authors treated 1217.7 (LINN) as the type but this collection is a post-1753 addition to the herbarium and ineligible as type. Clayton & Renvoize (in Polhill,
Fl. Trop. E. Africa,
Gramineae
3: 695. 1982) indicated a Dickinson collection from Bermuda (Herb. Sloane, BM) as a
syntype
, but it was not seen by Linnaeus and cannot be original material for the name.
