SMF 35063 (1: 7.1 cm ). FIGURE 11. Champsodon nudivittis , SMF 35063, 7.1 cm SL, Jizan, Saudi Arabia. Remarks. Despite a revision of the genus Champsodon by Nemeth (1994) , the taxonomy of the Red Sea species is still confused. Dor (1970) mistakenly reported Champsodon nudivittis as C. omanensis Regan, 1908 , and Goren et al. (2011) recently summarized records and confirmed the distribution of C. nudivittis from the Red Sea and eastern Mediterranean Sea. Kotthaus (1977) reported Champsodon capensis Regan, 1908 , from the southern Red Sea but his description is brief and uninformative. The presence of C. omanensis was confirmed by Klausewitz (1986) from deep water. Two species of the genus, C. capensis and C. vorax Günther, 1867 were caught in the eastern Mediterranean Sea ( Bariche 2010 , Dalyan et al. 2012 , respectively). In this study, a single specimen was trawled from a depth of about 50 m . We provisionally identify the specimen as Champsodon nudivittis on the basis of the following combination of characters: chin naked; about half of chest scaled; belly naked, except for a narrow band of scales between bases of pectoral and pelvic fins. More material from the Red Sea is required in order to determine how many species of the genus occur in the region.
