Besides the two extant species, two presumably extinct species have been described from Cuba ("Giant Solenodon ") and Hispaniola ( Antillogale marcanoi Patterson, 1962 ); see Morgan and Woods (1986) . Remains of Solenodon marcanoi have been found in a horizon of "Late Pleistocene or Recent" age ( Patterson, 1962 ).
