Whitaker (1974
, Mammalian Species, 43), who recognized 9 subspecies, 5 of which occur in Middle America (
Choate, 1970
). Handley (pers. comm., 1989) suggested that
floridana
may be a distinct taxon; if this proves correct, then the other southern subspecies should be restudied.
