Calhoun . DISTRIBUTION: Extreme SE Canada through EC and SW USA , Mexico and Central America south to Panama . SYNONYMS: berlandieri, celatus, cinereus , elasson, exilipes, eximius, floridana, harlani, macer, nayaritensis, micrurus, olivaceus, orophila, pergracilis, pueblensis, soricina, tropicalis. COMMENTS: Reviewed by Whitaker (1974 , Mammalian Species, 43), who recognized 9 subspecies, 5 of which occur in Middle America ( Choate, 1970 ). Handley (pers. comm., 1989) suggested that floridana may be a distinct taxon; if this proves correct, then the other southern subspecies should be restudied.
