Scopaeus velutinus
Motschulsky, 1858
This species was described from ‘Indes orientales’ by
Motschulsky (1858: 642
, 643). The record for Borneo (
Bernhauer 1922: 230
) may go back to
two male
Bornean specimens (Pagate, Telang 1881, leg. Grabowsky) of an undescribed species in the Fauvel collection (
ISNB
) identified as
Scopaeus decipiens
Kraatz, 1859
, which is considered a synonym of
S. velutinus
since
Fauvel (1904: 53)
.
Type
studies revealed that this synonymy is incorrect. Both
S. velutinus
and
S. decipiens
are absent from
Indonesia
. The undescribed species from Borneo is, however, closely related to the ‘true’
S. decipiens
from
India
.
