Systenus mallochi MacGowan, 1997 (Medeterinae) new to Portugal Number of specimens recorded. 1. Distribution. Thus far only recorded from Britain. Portugal : one province (Beira Baixa), first record for continental Europe! Ecology. The single Portuguese specimen was recorded from a Mediterranean biotope with Quercus suber and Quercus ilex . The species most likely originated from one of these tree species as Systenus species breed in rot-holes and sap-runs of deciduous trees. Systenus mallochi has been retrieved from Quercus petrea , Betula and Ulmus in Britain, and is believed to be more associated with rot-holes than with sap-runs ( MacGowan 1997 ).
