Liolaemus constanzae

.
Content:
Two subspecies restricted to the
Atacama Desert
in northern
Chile
(
Donoso-Barros 1966a
,
1970b
;
Cei 1993
;
Pincheira-Donoso & Núñez 2005
;
Pincheira-Donoso 2005
). Although
Liolaemus donosoi
was recently resurrected as a subspecies of
L. constanzae
(
Pincheira-Donoso & Núñez 2005
; see previous discussions in
Núñez & Jaksic 1992
;
Etheridge & Espinoza 2000
), it is still needed to evaluate with modern analytical procedures (
e.g.
molecular variables) the status of these two taxa. Indeed, at this time, limited morphological data and their fully isolated geographical ranges (separated by the preandean Domeyko mountain chain; see
Ramírez & Pincheira-Donoso 2005
) are the only available evidence supporting the subspecific rank of these lizards.
