Eschmeyer (2004) states as type locality 'St. Jago, Madeira', following earlier authors. The only known basis of the record is the original description by Bowdich (1825: 238, Fig. 41) who, though mainly treating fish species from Madeira, described this species in an addendum from 'St. Jago', an old Portuguese spelling of Santiago which is an island of the Cape Verde archipelago, and did not mention Madeira at all. Subsequent authors erroneously treated St. Jago as a location in Madeira. The species has never been found at Madeira; it occurs from the Cape Verde Islands southward to Angola . * Bodianus scrofa (Valenciennes, 1839) —Barred hogfish Recorded from Madeira by Quignard & Pras in Whitehead et al. (1986: 930-931) under the name Pseudolepidaplois scrofa . * Centrolabrus trutta (Lowe, 1834) —Atlantic wrasse Specimens previously identified as Symphodus melops (Linnaeus, 1758) , BMNH 1899.1.16-25-29, are based on this species. Thus, no reliable record of S. melops from Madeira exists. The species apparently should be transferred to the genus Symphodus ( Hanel et al. 2002 , Almada et al. 2003 ). * Coris julis (Linnaeus, 1758) —Mediterranean rainbow wrasse * Labrus bergylta Ascanius, 1767 —Ballan wrasse * Labrus mixtus Linnaeus, 1758 —Cuckoo wrasse Recorded from Madeira by Quignard & Pras in Whitehead et al. (1986: 927), and Gomon & Forsyth in Quéro et al. (1990 : 875-876) under the name Labrus bimaculatus (non Linnaeus, 1758). Opinion 1954 ( June 2000 ) established that Labrus bimaculatus is the type species of Cichlasoma and L. bimaculatus is a species of cichlid fishes. On the Official List of Specific Names in Zoology ( Eschmeyer, 2004 ). Quite rare in coastal waters of Madeira, while a yellow color morph of this species is not as rare in deeper waters. * Lappanella fasciata (Cocco, 1833) —Pointed spotty * Symphodus mediterraneus (Linnaeus, 1758) —Axillary wrasse Recorded from Madeira by Gomon & Forsyth in Quéro et al. (1990 : 877-878) on the basis of Crenilabrus pictus Lowe, 1838 which was treated as a junior synonym of S. mediterraneus , but not mentioned from there by Quignard & Pras in Whitehead et al. (1986: 934-935), even though the species is common at Madeira. * Thalassoma pavo (Linnaeus, 1758) —Ornate wrasse * Xyrichtys novacula (Linnaeus, 1758) —Pearly razorfish Recorded from Madeira by Gomon & Forsyth in Quéro et al. (1990 : 880-882) on the basis of Amorphocephalus granulatus Bowdich, 1825 , which was treated as a junior synonym of Xyrichtys novacula , but not mentioned from Madeira by Quignard & Pras in Whitehead et al. (1986: 941-942), even though the species was recorded by Nunes (1974: 164) and is common at Madeira. Colour photos from Madeira published by Wirtz (1994: 105) .
