Despite small differences in color (a white band on the nape, see Figure 3), this common garden eel probably belongs to the species
H. longissimus
, known from the tropical western Atlantic and from Madeira to the Cape Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic. Specimens are needed to confirm its identity. Colonies were seen on soft bottoms, no shallower than 10 m depth and down to at least 30 m depth, at Lagoa Azul, Diogo Vaz and Santana Islet.
